Jaunpur is one of the oldest cities of India. It lies at a distance of about 60 km from Varanasi.It is
situated on either side of the river Gomati. There are several traditions regarding the origin of its name according to
one tradition, its name is derived from Jamadgni, a famous seer after whose name it was earlier called Jamadagnipuram.
The supporters of this tradition paint to his Ashram that still lies at Jamaitha on the right bank of the Gomati River
about halfway between jaunpur and Jafarabad. The other tradition has it that the present name is of muslim origin and it
is derived fromJuna another name of Mohammd- Bin-Tughiaq in whose memory the city was founded by Feroz Shah (1351-1388)
